Following his graduation from Whittier College, Harris joined the US Marine Corps and served for four years. He then joined UPS where he spent four years as a manager and two as an engineer. He then took a position with Voluntary Service Overseas in Indonesia, designing rice storage methods.

In 1985, Harris became a partner at FAO Schwartz and turned around the company to become one of the leading toy stores in the world. His time at FAO left a lasting impact on retail, as Harris introduced the concept of entertainment retail, which focuses on providing a fun experience for customers. This philosophy is still used by retailers today, including Toys “R” Us and many others.
